Preventative
We can look at preventative medicine in two ways.
The first is the most obvious: keeping healthy people healthy. If you’re doing well, that’s great, let’s keep it that way. This can be seen as a “tune up” model—gentle support for what’s already working to make sure it keeps working well. This may mean infrequent acupuncture, mild herbal remedies, and focusing on diet and lifestyle choices for optimal performance.
The second aspect of preventative medicine is the “nip it in the bud” model. This approach is focused more on the daily discomforts of our lives that seem tolerable, but little by little, add unnecessary weight or drag to the system. Our bodies are made to run smoothly, so much so that all individual parts should fade into the background unless something really good or really bad is happening. More often than not, these discomforts are the way we perceive small problems that are begging for our attention before they become larger ones. Conditions like poor digestion (bloating, cramping, reflux, chronic loose stools or constipation), painful or irregular menstruation, poor sleep, and physical pain may be addressed in this manor. This approach looks similar to tune up model with a little more frequency.
Once these issues are resolved, we’re back to keeping healthy people healthy.
